The RBT Competency Assessment, Explained
The RBT Competency Assessment is a hands-on demonstration of core technician skills, observed and signed off by a qualified assessor. It is completely separate from the written exam: no computer, no Pearson VUE, no multiple choice. You perform the skills, with a client or in role-play, and the assessor verifies each one.
It sits in the middle of the certification path: after the 40-hour training, before the BACB application. You cannot submit your application without the signed assessment, which makes finding an assessor the step that most often delays independent candidates. People already employed by ABA providers rarely feel this, since their supervising BCBA runs it as part of onboarding.
What skills are assessed?
The assessment covers the same territory as the Task List, demonstrated rather than described. Expect to perform continuous and discontinuous measurement while watching a session or video, run a preference assessment, implement discrete trial teaching and a naturalistic teaching procedure, implement components of a behavior reduction plan, and show professional skills like objective session note writing. Some items may be assessed by interview, with the assessor asking you to explain what you would do and why.
How to prepare in one week
Rehearse, do not reread. Take frequency and duration data against therapy session videos until your numbers stabilize. Run a full MSWO on a housemate with snacks. Say the discrete trial sequence out loud, instruction, response, consequence, pause, while physically moving through it with flashcards. Write one objective session note about something you watched and strip every interpretive word from it. The renewal version
Competency does not end at certification: each year, a Renewal Competency Assessment is completed as part of maintaining the credential, re-verifying your skills with an assessor.
